Historic photo finish as Mystik Dan captures 150th Kentucky Derby
In one of the most thrilling finishes in Derby history, three horses crossed the wire separated by just inches in the first three-horse photo finish since 1947. Mystik Dan, at 18-1 odds, saved ground throughout before finding a narrow opening in the stretch to prevail.
The victory made Kenny McPeek the first trainer since 1952 to sweep both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby in the same weekend, while Brian Hernandez Jr. became just the eighth jockey to accomplish this rare double.

Race Breakdown
Early Pace: Track Phantom and Just Steel set a moderate early pace (22.97, 46.63), with favorite Fierceness positioned prominently but already showing signs of distress after a poor start.
Mid-Race: Mystik Dan settled perfectly in fourth along the rail, tracking the leaders while saving ground. Sierra Leone and Forever Young were positioned further back, biding their time under patient rides.
Turning for Home: Approaching the quarter pole, Mystik Dan found a narrow seam between horses and shot through to take the lead. The move was perfectly timed by Hernandez, who had been waiting for the right moment.
Stretch Drive: As Mystik Dan opened up a two-length lead, Sierra Leone and Forever Young mounted their challenges from the outside. The two imported horses engaged in a fierce battle, bumping repeatedly as they closed ground on the leader.
Photo Finish: In the final 50 yards, all three horses converged at the wire in the closest Kentucky Derby finish since 1996. The photo review took several tense minutes before Mystik Dan was declared the winner by the smallest of margins.
